Notes on the Watchers and Genesis 6

Shan’s Genesis 6 Episodes Notes

-Genesis takes place over the course of about 2,000 years.

-Genesis 3:14-15 is The beginning of the seed war!

So the Lord God said to the serpent:

Because you have done this,
you are cursed more than any livestock
and more than any wild animal.
You will move on your belly
and eat dust all the days of your life.

I will put hostility between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring.
He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.

Genesis 3:14-15

-So many people glance over the “I will put hostility (or enmity) between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring”.

-So Wait? Satan has offspring? Yes! Yes he does!! Anything that is the counterfeit of YHWH’s creation from His created order falls into that category… Now with that in mind, let’s jump into Genesis 6!

1 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with[a] humans forever, for they are mortal[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Genesis 6:1-8

Who are the Sons of God  ?

  • Angelic Beings

  • The Watchers - (Daniel 4:7, 1 Enoch)

  • The Divine Council - Psalm 82:1, Deuteronomy 32:8, 1 Kings 22:19–23, Job 1:6–12; 2:1–7, Isaiah 6, Zechariah 3, Daniel 7)

  • The Grigori (2 Enoch)

*The Books of Enoch refer to both good and bad Watchers/Grigori , with a primary focus on the rebellious ones.

These angelic beings held positions of hierarchy among God’s spiritual family.

It is clear through scripture and extra-biblical texts that there is a ranking among angelic beings.

**It  is my personal belief that “The Watchers” were ranked just under the Archangels. The highest ranking there is.

The Watchers were tasked with the important jobs of overseeing the earth and watching over the human race. Hence their Title. Their job included overseeing human development but they were restricted with interfering with mankind and were not supposed to get  involved.

Although by the 5th century the book of Enoch was not considered Canon and is now only considered to be so by the Jewish Ethiopian communities as well as the Christian Eastern Ethiopian Orthodox Church– It is at the very least an extra-biblical text that should be looked at as historically accurate. I also want to note, there are 3 different books of Enoch.

“Although this book is considered apocryphal for the Western canon, it is contained in the Ethiopic Bible. It was considered sacred by some but it was left out of the Bible and disappeared for centuries until it was rediscovered in Ethiopia. According to most scholars, part of it was written in third century BCE and part of it in the first century CE (the part related to the Son of Man). Although the oldest complete copies of 1 Enoch are K-9 or Kebran 9, dated late fourteenth early fifteenth century and Ethiopian Monastic Microfilm Library (EMML 2080) of the fifteenth or fourteenth century, fragments found in Qumramin the 1950s are more than 2000 years old. Other old important manuscripts are Abbadianus 55 (possibly fifteenth century) and British Museum Orient 485 (first half of the sixteenth century).

The 2nd Book of Enoch, the Slavonic Enoch, is another apocryphal book, found complete only in Old Slavonic manuscripts, and it was once present in the Old Slavonic Bible. It's usually dated to the first century CE although Matthew Black in The Oxford Guide to People & Places of the Bible state that there is no manuscript earlier than the fourteenth century BCE.

The 3rd Book of Enoch, the Hebrew Enoch, is a Rabbinic text originally written in Hebrew usually dated to the fifth century CE. Some experts believe it was written by Rabbi Ishmael (second century CE).” (https://www.chaucersbooks.com/book/9781777349028)

Genesis 6:9 states that Noah was a “Blameless” or “Perfect”,, the Hebrew root word is tāmîm (taw-meem'). This word means “Without Blemish, Whole, Complete”. When we read this in context Vs. 9 is telling us that Noah’s DNA, his humanity, was still whole, was still intact, was still complete, and had not been blemished or corrupted by the mixing of angelic and human races, He did not possess hybrid DNA. https://www.blueletterbible.org/lexicon/h8549/kjv/wlc/0-1/

This brings all things into clearer focus.

Scriptures that refer to Women/ Mothers as the Gatekeepers

“She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” Proverbs 31:27 (NIV).

2 But as for you, teach what accords with sound[a] doctrine. 2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. 6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. 9 Bondservants[b] are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.”
